How to Organize Your Holiday Decor

Holiday Decor Organization: Store Smart, Celebrate Easy

Love the holiday glow-up? Hate the post-party chaos? These quick tips keep your decor pristine, findable, and fuss-free. One spot, smart bins, done.

1. Claim Your Decor Den

Pick one storage zone—basement, attic, closet. No more house-wide hunts! Outdoor decor is safe for the garage or basement but I would avoid the attic if possible due to dramatic heat fluctuations.

2. Bin Solo, Label Bold

Clear bins with lids: One holiday per bin (no Santa-skeleton smooshes!).

  • Label: "Christmas Ornaments" or "Halloween Mantle."

  • Group by type/room for repeat magic.

  • Add towels, mugs, pillows—everything festive!

  • More smaller bins are easier for fragile items.

PRO TIP: Keep your kid’ holiday themed artwork as decorating gold. Bring back fun memories when you pull it out for the holidays. Preserve pictures in plastic zipper folders and store with other holiday decor.

3. Ditch the Dead Weight

Unused stuff? Donate to charities or high school drama department.

Broken? Toss it.

Less clutter = more joy and less to go through to find what you really want to use.

4. Outdoor Gear Gets Its Own Garage Spot

Thoroughly clean + dry before boxing. No bugs or water, please. Also remove all batteries before storage.

Wreaths love to be protected from dust and spiders in a zipper bag.

5. Pic Your Setup 📸

If you love the current decor setup then take a picture to remind you of what you can recreate next year. Title and store pictures in your Notes app folder ("Christmas Dining Talbe"). Instant inspo next year!

Finally, tailor to your space—measure before buying bins. You might need fewer than you think if you store things properly.

Sweater Box— perfect for groups of smaller items like ornaments, napkins, candles, mugs, cords, or small pumpkins, paper valentines, etc.

Weathertite bins. These are so sturdy and have locking lids. The 41 qt and 62 qt stack very well together.

45 qt bin Another option for all kinds of holiday decor

48” x 18” shelves with wheels. If you need it today, check your local Home Depot and Costco stores.

3 shelf option if you don’t have a lot of decor or space. I’d still add the wheels.

You must label the contents of your bins even if they are clear! Use a label maker or Sharpie & white duct tape.
