Summer to Fall Transition Tips

Summer transitioning into fall is very welcome in our house because it ushers in cooler weather, football, and gorgeous leaves. However it can be a little confusing in our closets due to the mixed weather messages.

Plus we’re all dying to wear fall clothes!

Here are some tips to make the seasonal transition to fall easier and less overwhelming,

  1. Move your lighter-colored and-weight clothes to the back of your closet. September is when we tend to be reaching for longer sleeves and jeans so tanks, sleeveless tops, and shorts can be moved out of the way.

  2. Donate or give away summer clothes that you didn’t wear all season and don’t anticipate wearing.

  3. Trade out summer shoes for booties & loafers. While you may still wear the occasional flip flop or chunkier sandal in the fall, move out your lighter colored shoes and espadrilles to make room for your fall shoes.

  4. Inspect your boots or other fall shoes to see if they need repairs like taps or soles or if they need to get tossed.

  5. Wash all of your beach & pool towels, coverups, & bathing suits. Anything you wore that was summer-activity specific needs to be washed before you put it away. Inspect your suits to make sure they are in good condition for next year.

  6. Dump out your pool/ beach bag to clear out any other summer detritus like sand, old sunscreen, crushed water bottles, worn out hair ties, etc.

Summer travel bags tend to get forgotten in the bottom of a closet or garage until next year. Not only do the bags get damaged this way but you also miss out on treasures like lost books, crumpled cash, or a favorite lip gloss. Clean them out before putting them away.

  7. Clean out your car from summer road trips. While your car can use a cleaning anytime, right now is a good time to clean out all of the summer specific such as towels (see #3), sunscreen, sports equipment, or anything else you won’t need for a while.
Car trips mean crumbs, wrappers, crayons, and other treasures that can probably be trashed. You want to make room for fun fall activities like apple picking and hiking to see the changing leaves.

  8. Last, but certainly not least, toss out any sunscreen that you won’t use anymore. While I recommend and use sunscreen every day, if you’re not going to be using it you might as well toss it out. Sunscreen doesn’t last forever and there’s nothing worse than ending up with a bad sunburn because yours expired.

While I think it’s hard to embrace fall fully when you’re sweating while drinking a pumpkin spice latte, the small steps you take now to close down summer means it won’t surprise you later.

You still may use some of your summer clothes, shoes, or beach towels but taking the time to take care of them now and put them away in their proper home means you’ll be able to find them, ready to be used, anytime!

Happy organizing!
