Seasonings such as your herbs and spices should enhance your cooking not add to your stress level. Whether you store them in a drawer or cabinet in your kitchen or on a shelf in your pantry you want them to be visible, current, and easily accessible.

Who has time to look everywhere for the one spice you need only to find you don’t have enough or any at all?

Or, who has space to keep storing the excess bottles of seasonings you keep buying because you can never find it when you need it?

I love organizing all parts of a kitchen and here are my tips to make organizing spices and seasonings easier:

  1. Take inventory so you know what you have on hand.

  2. Keep them all in one place. No more looking multiple places when you’re cooking or baking.

  3. Check expiration dates. While most seasonings will last past their expiration date, their flavor fades. If you haven’t used it before the expiration date, you probably won’t and don’t need to keep it on hand.

  4. Alphabetize them so you know what order they should be in.

  5. If you store them in a cabinet, invest in a lazy susan or you can use a stair step riser to keep them visible.

  6. Lots of newer construction homes have narrow cabinets by the stove for storing spices. This can be challenging because you can’t see the sides of the bottles with the labels. Use your trusty label maker or buy some spice labels to put on the tops of the bottles so you can identify what you’re looking for. I still recommend alphabetizing them.

Here are some examples of spice organization we’ve done for clients’ homes.

Spice drawer where you can lay the spices down is a treat. We transferred the seasonings to the same style bottle and added white labels . We also put in drawer inserts so they didn’t roll around and were angled.

This 2 story bamboo lazy susan keeps the spices together and in order in this cabinet. Don’t the consistent bottles and labels look great?

Spices bought in bulk went into these rectangular containers which were easier for this client to use. Of course, we labeled everything, and they can be reused if necessary.

Another fun spice drawer with short rectangular containers. Notice the alphabetical order!

These clear spice jars are easy to open and the white labels are easy to read. They are about the same width as regular spice jars so don’t take up more space.  If you have the vertical space, the 2 tier lazy susan works great

While your kitchen and pantry design will dictate your options on where you have adequate space to store seasonings, getting them organized will make it more functional for you. Upgrading your current system with custom labels or jars is certainly an investment but one that will bring a smile every time you open the drawer or cabinet.
