My Travel Essentials

Have you ever realized before you even got to your destination that you forgot something important? Have you ever checked in to your room or rental and thought, “I really wish I had remembered “x”?

Yes, me, too. It’s a horrible feeling.

I used to travel for business all the time. I logged about 3 domestic trips per month for over 15 years with a few international trips thrown in.

This was the time that I honed my packing and travel strategies so that I minimized my stress and didn’t forget essentials. I put together a packing checklist and outfit planner that I wrote about on this post.

  1. Travel candle & matches. Create a little ambience or get rid of stale hotel room smells. I like ones with a lid so you can pack them easily.

  2. Light weight robe. Bonus if it can double as a jacket.

  3. Fuzzy slippers. A little comfort for your feet especially if you have a cold floor.

  4. Or flip flops. You really don’t want to put your work shoes back on to go to the lobby for coffee.

  5. Non digital reading material. You never know how long that battery is going to last and isn’t it just nice to turn actual pages? This is a good time to catch up reading magazines that have been sitting in your inbox.

One thing I learned from all of this packing and unpacking was to leave the travel essentials in the suitcase. I don’t think you need to have duplicates of everything but where you leave items in the suitcase, that’s less for you to remember.

Get inexpensive duplicates of the essentials and leave them in your bag. Here are some of my favorites for inspiration.
