Uncomplicate Your Linen Closet

In the middle of a chaotic time, it's comforting to know that you can create an oasis of calm. You may not feel  powerful or especially enthusiastic right now but being able to assert some control will turn that around.

You have the power and time to tame your linen closet! And if you can assert control in one area of your home, it will filter over to other areas, if you let it.

Organizing your linen closet is a microcosm of organizing ANYTHING. Here are the steps:

  1. Take everything out. I know it doesn't sound like fun but you'll probably find something unexpected that you were looking for or that you had forgotten about.

  2. Match up the sheet sets. You can fold them neatly later but for now just create groups of the sheet sets.

  3. Group sheets sets by bed size or by room, whichever makes more sense for your household. Full-size "Frozen" sheets don't get mixed in with Full-size guest room sheets.

  4. If you have towels in the closet, group them together by type: bath towels/sheet, hand towels, wash cloths, etc.

  5. Identify and classify the remaining sheets and towels by type. Rags? Dog washing towels? Extra pillowcases?

  6. Get rid of the excess. They do not go back into the closet unless they serve a specific purpose such as sheets for an inflatable air mattress.

  7. Fold the sheet sets neatly. I realize this feels like you need an extra arm but here is a fitted sheet folding instructional video to help you. 🤓

  8. Sheets and towels, grouped together by size and/ or location go back in the closet. Put them on separate shelves if you have enough space.

  9. Close the door; you're done. 💪🏻

Organizing this one space gives you the tools to organize any space!
It involves editing out what you no longer need or use.
You create groups of like items. They may be alike in purpose or style or size but they belong together.
You store like items together.
You designate a home for them. You store them close to where you use them.
You make their appearance visually appealing and identifiable. If all of the queen sheets, extra pillow cases, and bath towels are in their right places, you know exactly what they are by looking at them.

Does it feel like I'm speaking a foreign language? I'd love to hear your thoughts on the linen closet as a microcosm of your home.
