Organizing deep shelves

Deep cabinet shelves are a blessing and a curse. While it is nice to have all of that space for storage, a lot of things get lost in the back because we can’t see or access it easily. Here are my tips and suggestions for organizing these larger sized spaces and keeping them that way!

Whether you have a pantry, closet, or cabinet with deep (over 15”) shelves, you need a system to keep everything stored there organized and accessible. I recommend using long bins or baskets that function as drawers to bring the back of the cabinet forward. The container not only helps you access everything in the cabinet but it also defines the maximum quantify that you can store there. Subdivide the container with dividers if you need to keep things from falling over.

Another option, especially in a pantry or under a sink, is to use a large lazy susan. This is good for cans and jars in a pantry or bottles of medications, supplements & protein powders above the refrigerator. There are divided lazy Susans and ones that are open. In general, a lazy susan is better for containing round objects than square ones.

If you have the vertical space, you can put in a couple of cabinet shelves and place long bins below and above.

As always, measure twice before you purchase! Not only should you measure the space but also the quantity of what you’re putting in the container.

Everything is better with a label so use your handy dandy label maker to label either the shelf or the container so you don’t have to remember what goes where. This also helps with other family members using the space!
