Organizing your holiday cards
Getting and sending cards at Christmas is a highlight of the holiday season for some. It’s always fun to see pictures of friends and family and to hear the annual update. We love hearing from people we haven’t seen in a while. And it’s fun to display these cards as part of our holiday decor during the season.
But what should we do with them AFTER the holidays? It feels rude to just throw them in the trash—the paper is so nice!
Here are some options and none of them is wrong:
Go through them intentionally. Sit down with your family or individually and read through each card slowly and thoughtfully. Remember how you met that person and think of fond memories you have. Maybe you’d like to pray for them at this time. Then….
Throw them away. It’s ok, you’ll enjoyed the card for the season. Plus the person who sent it to you has probably already thrown away the one you sent her. It’s not a priceless treasure.
Keep them with your Christmas decorations. They will accumulate year after year. However, it can be nice to look at last year’s cards when you’re putting up this year’s decorations or sitting by the fire.
Store them in a box or zipper bag. The box size is dependent on how many you receive each year. You can store them in a zipper bag by year and keep all of the bags in the box labeled “Holiday Cards”.
Keep them on a ring. Use a hole punch to put a hole in the corner and then put them on a book ring. Add festive ribbon for fun! Store them with your holiday decor and bring them out to display when you decorate again.
Use the card as a gift tag. Cut the card in half and use the image as a gift tag for future gifts. This does not work for photo cards.
Use the image to identify friends. Take a picture of the card and use it as that person’s Contact photo in your phone. Then throw it away.
Those extra copies of the cards that you order "just in case" you run out? You can let those go, too. Save a couple in your memorabilia box but you don't have to keep that half full box of cards from that you may have overestimated the order quantity.
Sending and receiving cards should not be a burden. If it becomes something you dread because it’s overly complicated, then stop. Give cheerfully until you can’t.
